Will Alzheimer's Soon be Cured?

I was recently watching the movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes and in that a scientist is trying to cure Alzheimer’s since his dad is being attacked by that illness and he is trying to prevent it.  Long story short he tests it on apes and they get incredibly intelligent and attack the humans. But besides that I was interested on the topic of Alzheimer’s and I wanted to find out if there actually is going to be a cure for it. I decided to look the topic up and found the article “Cure for Alzheimer’s” that was on Mail Online and looked the topic up on Wikipedia for additional information.

The article talks about how in about five years we may have a cure for Alzheimer’s or at least something that will decrease the effects of Alzheimer’s. Harry Cayton the chief executive of the Alzheimer’s society said “This really does make us optimistic”.

From Wikipedia and this online post they both said that Alzheimer’s is increasing exponentially. On the Mail online website it said that in Britain 500,00 people suffer from AD or Alzheimer’s disease. On Wikipedia it said that there are about 26.6 million people with AD all over the world and in 2050, 1 in 85 people will have AD. But luckily they have found a cure.

On the right you see a normal brain and on the left you see a brain of someone with the Alzheimer's Disease

In class we were learning about how they may soon find a cure for HIV by attacking the receptors on the cells that the HIV virus attaches to. This is kind of similar but a little different.  The scientist have made a vaccine that attacks a protein called beta-amyloid which damages brain cells.

Trials are being done in the United Kingdom and the results show that it is safe and there are no side effects. I thought how did these people do this and they said that the made mice genetically engineered to have something close to AD. They tested it on them and soon found it worked.  Before this Professor Richard Morris, of Edinburgh's department of neuroscience said that there was o way to look at animal’s short-term memory.

But with the use of mazes that changed they could use this vaccine and find out if it worked since with Alzheimer’s the people struggling with the disease can usually remember things that happened a long time ago but not things that happened recently. With this vaccine the plaque on the brain is removed and the person can remember and learn things easier.

Within about five years after testing the vaccine on larger groups it will be open to the public and the rates of Alzheimer’s will hopefully decrease.  The future is looking a hole lot brighter now that scientists are discovery these things.

  1. Matt,
Your blog post was one which really grabbed my attention. It isn't every day that one makes a connection from Planet of the Apes to science class, especially when it's something which could actually be quite helpful in years to come. Although you chose a great topic to write about, you may want to re-examine some of your word choices and sentences. There were a few instances, like when you said "But with the use of mazes that changed they could use this vaccine and find out if it worked since with Alzheimer’s the people struggling with the disease can usually remember things that happened a long time ago but not things that happened recently," that made me question your use (or rather, not using) commas and starting a paragraph with the word "but." However, despite these small inconsistencies, you wrote a very interesting post about Alzheimer's. Great job!

  2. Good job! I really liked how you introduced the blog post with a movie you watched and connected it back to the main point of your post. Your title also really caught my attention because I wanted to read your post to find the answer to the question represented in your title. Try to connect it back to things that we learned in Biology class and add more of your own opinion, but other then that great job!

  3. Very interesting connection to biology! I would never have expected there to be a connection between "Planet of the Apes" and Alzheimer's disease as well as our science class. This article seemed very interesting to me because of the fact that we could make a cure or lower the effects of Alzheimer disease . I wonder if there are other diseases that effect the brain that we could cure or lower the effects of? It seems that there have been quite a number of ways to prevent diseases in the last decade or so and I hope these recent discoveries in medicine continue.

  4. Good job on your post, Matt. The way you tied the article into the movie was an interesting way to introduce your topic, and it made me want to read more. It's great that a disease such as Alzheimers is so close to being cured, as it affects so many people worldwide. I have just one question: are there or have there been any side effects to this cure? Good job overall.

  5. Great post, Matt! I found your connection to "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" to be a very interesting choice. I also liked how you said it inspired you to research further, thus introducing your real sources for the blog post. You did a great job explaining something that is presumably very complicated. Would it be possible to give people this cure before the even contract the disease, as to prevent them from ever getting it? Although a few commas certainly wouldn't have hurt your writing, it was still an exemplary blog post! Great job!

  6. This was such a cool post! I love how you compare two things instead of just writing a response to one article and you chose to connect Planet of the Apes!!! This article seemed really interesting about the Alzheimer disease. Because of the increase in curing diseases, I think we can all expect some new cures to be discovered soon.

  7. Very interesting post Matt. I enjoyed your summaries and appreciated how I did not have to read the articles or watch the movie to understand. A cure for Alzheimers disease would be a major break through and make many people and families not suffer. Can't wait to see what the next five years bring . There were some grammatical mistakes but other than that, excellent post. I both learned and enjoyed reading your post.

  8. Matt, it was as good to connect your post to The Rise Of the Planet Of the Apes. It was the perfect connection because Alzheimer's disease is the reason why the apes rose up. Anyway, the topic of your post is very interesting since normally when someone has Alzheimer's they unfortunately only get worse as time goes on. I think a cure for Alzheimer's would be among the best things that have ever happened to humanity. I think it would have been better to hear more of your personal opinion and you should probably run through your article for spelling/grammar issues.

  9. Cool Topic! This post definitely caught my eye because of the title. This is because recently I have been hooked on the show "Grey's Anatomy" a drama about surgeons in a hospital. In the show the main character Meredith Grey's mother has alzheimers. In the show the doctors are working on a cure for alzheimers. It is very nice that this was really been being done by real doctors. I liked that your post was really easy to understand. You make it easy enough for kids like me to understand. Keep it up!

  10. Great job on your blog post! You make the topic sound incredibly interesting. I like how you made a personal connection by mentioning watching "The Rise of the Planet of the Apes" because it made it sound like you liked writing about this issue. My grandfather has Alzheimer's and I agree with you that it's terrible they haven't found a cure yet. Because of this personal connection I already know a lot about the topic and think that you did a good job summarizing all the important points. I do think that it is great scientists are trying to find a cure and hope they find one soon. Awesome job!

  11. Matt, great job on your post! i thought it was very clever to make this connection to biology class from the movie you had seen, and because of that i could tell that you were interested in what you were writing about. I enjoyed learning about this topic from your post and its great now knowing that the future of cures for this disease looks so positive. overall, a well written post!

  12. This was a very interesting blog post. I found it funny how you got the idea from watching a movie. I thought that your explanation of the process and connecting it back to class was very well done. I also enjoyed the pictures you chose because the one of the apes made me confused and made me want to read more to find out what it is about. I am optomistic that this cure may work. I am interested in what you think about it.

  13. Great job on this blog post. The title of this blog post caught my attention because it made me want to read how Alzheimer’s could be cured. I thought it was interesting how you connected a movie to your blog. Not many people have done that before! I wish your could have found other ways it connected to our biology class. Otherwise, I really enjoyed this post.

  14. Matt, this was a very good blog post and with a very intriguing topic. I had never known what had caused Alzheimer's but I do now and I would never have expected scientists to come up with a vaccine to defend against it. I agree with the scientists in saying this makes our future brighter considering the rate at which AD was coming in. However, I do not believe them when they say that there are no side effects because every vaccine has to have one, they just might not have seen one yet. This was a very well done blog post, good job Matt.

  15. Matt, I loved reading your post. I could relate to a lot with what you said because my Grandfather just died last week because of the disease. I liked the connection between the movie "Planet of the Apes" and your blog. Like troy, I think its a bunch of bologna when they say there are no side effects for the vaccine, everything these days has some kind of side effect, weather it be short term or long term. I liked this post very much!

  16. Matt,
This topic was extremely interesting and I hadn't heard that they found a cure to AD. Many people have Alzheimer's disease and my great-grandmother even passed away due to it. This cure is a huge step in the right direction. I liked your connection to Planet of the Apes, as well as the similarity to the cure of HIV. I agree with Sarah and Troy that it seems impossible that this vaccine has no side effects. However, this was a great post about a very intriguing topic.

  17. This post is fantastic. Your title was obviously very eye-catching, and I had no idea about this possible cure. My great-grandmother had Alzheimer's, so I grew up hearing about it quite a lot. I liked your pop-culture reference. I am happy to hear about this new development and hope that our class will follow this subject in the future. I am amazed that there are no side effects of this vaccine. There were a few technical errors, but that didn't really have an overall effect because the subject was relatable and interesting. Good job!

  18. Great job! Your connection between Planet of the Apes and Alzheimer's was really interesting. It's great that scientists are developing a cure for such a terrible disease. So many people die from AD and it's great that this huge step is being made in finding a cure. I think that your connection to the HIV virus that we have been learning about it class was very interesting as well. Overall really nice job!

  19. This was a great post, Matt. I like how you connected your topic, something you had to do, to Planet of the Apes, something you chose to watch. It really showed how interested you are in this topic. Before reading this, I figured Alzheimer's would never be cured, just something that would always be a threat to us. I guess I should have expected a cure to be found, for when there's a will there's a way and scientists nowadays have an abundance of the previously stated "will". Very interesting topic and great post!

  20. Great blog! I know that there are many people in the world who have Alzheimer’s, and I didn't think that there was a cure for it. I am glad that scientists have been able to find a way that might be able to cure it. I also think it's interesting that they are able to test their product on mice by using mazes to see what they can remember. Overall good job!

  21. Matt I think you made a great blog post. I myself have never met anybody with Alzheimers but i think it is amazing how scientists have almost found a cure for it. I find it amazing what the desiese does to the brain. Also I liked how you connected your post to a movie that you have seen. My favorite part of this article was when you explained how the vaccine worked. Over all a very informative and very well done post with few mistakes.

  22. Good job Matt! It was good how you connected it to not only class but also to a movie which many of us have seen. There were a lot of statistics in here that made the actual impact curing Alzheimer's would be. Overall very easy to understand and very helpful.

  23. Great post bud! i really like the over all blog post. I thought it was funny when i saw the picture of the movie. But more about the blog. I thought you did a good job explaining the concept of Alzheimer's to the reader. You made it quick and simple. So many people are effected so i think its spectacular that they are this close to finding a cure. However this didn't really connect to our bio class, but i still think its important to post about this topic because this disease is affecting the lives of so many. In the end, great post and keep up the good work!

  24. Great job! I found this post very interesting because I had no idea that they had found a cure. My great grandmother, we believe, is starting to show symptoms of Alzheimer's so it makes me hopeful that there will soon be a cure. I really liked all of your statistics, it made the post a lot more effective. I thought your connections to class were really great and overall the post was very easy to follow. The only thing I would suggest would be to maybe go back and fix any spelling or grammatical issues but other than that, great job!

  25. Great blog post! I like how you watched a movie, and not only enjoyed it, but used it to help you learn about Alzheimers . The post was very detailed, and the diagram in particular helped me understand what happens to the brains of people who have Alzheimers. It is exciting to think that we may be able to help those people, and maybe we will eventually be able to cure them completely.

  26. I really liked your blog too Matt. I too watched the movie, i thought it was pretty good. I thought this was a very detailed blog post and very informative. I have not been affected by anyone with Alzheimers but it sounds very serious. I learned a lot from your post and I think you did a great blog.

  27. Great post! Alzheimers is a very sad disease and I am glad to see scientists may be close to finding a cure! I thought your clearly understood your topic and did a great job of helping me understand as well. I liked how you could connect it, not only to class, but also to a movie you enjoyed watching. Nice job!

  28. Good post! I thought the topic you picked was very interesting and something not many people think about. You got me thinking, how different the world would be if a cure for this disease and others were created. I haven't seen this movie yet but I certainly will soon after reading this post. I think that your could have proofread a little more but tiny mistakes didn't distract me too much from your content. I thought you got you point across and the picture really helped. Good job!
