The Article “Bug Spray Poisoning” author Eric Perez (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/002763.htm)
Have you ever
thought that putting bug spray on is less safe than just keeping it off. Well
In the article “ Bug Spray Poisoning” written by Eric Perez they go into depth
on how most bug sprays contain DEET which is an active and working repellant
for bugs. DEET causes many negative effects on the human body and some very
extreme effects on the body if it is swallowed like seizures and tremors.
Although DEET can cause all of these things if you use the recommended amount
it is safe. The thing you have to think of is if it is worth the risk.
I have always
thought of bug spray as being a helpful thing that protected me from diseases
found in mosquitos like malaria but now I realize that DEET can cause things
just as serious like trouble breathing and skin rashes. This idea reminds me of
the article we read in class “ Should Pregnant Women eat Fish”. In the article
it explains how eating too much fish can cause high levels of mercury
contamination but eating the right amount can lead into proper brain development
and other positive effects on the baby. If you use too much bug spray or leave
it on for too long it can cause mild and extreme effects.
This article did
not fully agree with not using bug spray. The article stated that if you use
small amounts of DEET it should be safe for even pregnant women and small
children. I realize that in most cases DEET will not cause severe damage but if
you do get it in your eyes or swallow large amounts you can receive permanent damage
in your brain and eyesight. There are certain companies that instead of using
DEET they use pyrethrins. Pyrethrins are considered nontoxic but it does have a
downside, the bug spray will be less efficient against bugs.
I think I will always use bug spray but I
now know that I have to be careful with it and know what to do with it. I think
that wearing bug spray is less of a risk than not wearing it and having a
greater chance of getting diseases that bugs carry like malaria. All that you
need to think now is if the risk of not wearing bug spray is greater than the
risk of using it.
I really enjoyed reading your blog post. I was grabbed into the reading just from the title because I use bug spray all the time so I was very interested to read what you had to say about it. I thought that you made a good point when you said that you used to think that bug spray would protect you from disease but DEET that is in most bug sprays is harmful to humans. I liked how you tied this topic to the article we read in bio "should pregnant woman eat fish?". It related nicely because both fish and bug spray have pros and cons. Overall great job!
ReplyDeleteCole I think you chose an amazing article to respond to. A lot of people can easily make connections to this topic because most people have used bug spray. I was instantly grabbed by your title because I was always told that bug spray was a protectant, but when reading if bug spray was worth it, I was instantly hooked into the topic. I think this has made me a bit cautious because in the summer, I sometimes use a lot. I also agree with your conclusion. We shouldn’t not use bug spray because then we wouldn’t be protected against diseases like malaria. We should be careful with the amount of bug spray using because too much could be hazardous to our health. I also really liked your connection to the pregnant women eating fish because fish is good for them but it can also be dangerous to their health like the bug spray. I really thought your article was well written and very informative.
ReplyDeleteCole, I thought your post was very interesting. From looking at the title I was hooked, and I wanted to read more about how bug spray could have risks. I agree with you when you say that it is safer to use bug spray than to not use it, but what is the recommended amount that should be used to avoid the negative effects? I also agree that this topic relates to pregnant women eating fish, as there are benefits and risks to each. Overall, your post was very interesting and good job.
ReplyDeleteI think you did a great job on your post. Your title made me want to read this article because I always use bug spray, so I wanted to know the risks of using it. I like how you included the reasons we should use bug spray with DEET, but also why maybe someone would rather use a bug spray with pyrethrins so they didn't put them at risks for some of the possible harmful effects of DEET. I agree with you and I will also keep using bug spray but it's good to be aware of some of the possible effects it could have. Is there anyway that we could apply bug spray more safely? Also, how much bug spray is too much to put apply? Your connection that you made to the article "Should Pregnant Women Eat Fish?" was very interesting and it does really relate to your topic which is really cool. I think that overall your post was interesting and you did a good job!
ReplyDeleteCole, great job on constructing you post! When I saw the title I was imediatly attracked to it, because I am a big bug spray user and I wanted to know how bug spray was dangerous. After reading the post, you helped make me relize that bug spray is a double edged sword, and I shouldn't use too much of it. Your post was very interesting, and informative, you did a fantastic job
