Why Aren’t Humans Preventing Oil Spills

The article, “National Wildlife Federation says environmental effects of BP spill far from over" by Mark Schleifstein was written in The Times-Picayune, http://www.nola.com/news/gulf-oil-spill/index.ssf/2013/04/national_wildlife_federation_s_1.html. This article helps spread awareness to some animals endangered by oil spills. I thought this was a great article, because animals cannot speak for themselves.

One main idea of this article is that oil spills are destroying wet lands.  To me it is sad that beautiful waters are being destroyed by oil spills. The BP oil rig, Deepwater Horizon, had an oil spill on April 2010 in Louisiana wet lands and the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf is still not fully back to the way it was before the spill. Having oil stuck in the water is terrible for the environment because it kills animals, plants, etc. I think we should have more organizations cleaning up wetlands, because wet lands are getting destroyed.

The next main idea of the article is that humans aren’t trying to prevent oil spills from happening. Sometimes oil spills are an accident, but in this article it states that the BP oil company could have done something to prevent the oil spill. In the article it quotes the BP oil company was fully accountable for gross negligence and willful misconduct"
This quote proves that this oil spill could have been prevented, but the humans chose not too try to fix it. Humans need to start taking responsibility over their own actions, because it can lead to terrible environmental issues like oil spills.

The third main idea in the article bothers me the most: oil spills are endangering animals. We may not see these animals in the ocean, but they’re there and in danger from oil spills.  In biology class we watched The Lorax , and the video connected to oil spills, because the thneed factory was pumping all of this disgusting waste into the river filled with fish. The Onceler did not even notice! That relates to a real life situation of humans letting oil spills stay in a body of water, hurting many animals. Some organisms are sea turtles, blue tuna, bottle nose dolphin, and deep sea coral. I am sure most of you probably didn’t know that those organisms were endangered by oil spills. Not knowing about these endangered animals is terrible because animals need us, they could go extinct before you know it.  This is how the BP oil spill affects us and wildlife.

  1. I think that your article summary was very through and you stated all of the main ideas clearly. I also agree that the people from oil companies and other organizations should take more responsibility for the mess that has been made because it isn't going to disappear on its own. I think your article was very informative because I didn't know that so little was being done about oil spills.
