Could breathing kill you?

In China pollution levels have reached extreme levels because of their extremely fast economic growth.  The levels of air pollution in China are the cause of factories. In the article ”China’s Plan to Curb Air Pollution Sets Limits on Coal Use and Vehicles” in The New York Times written by Edward Wong  he writes about the increasing deaths in China because of pollution. This article was written in September recently after Chinas pollution had reached 40 times exposure limit recommended by the World Health Organization. They wrote” Ambient air pollution alone is blamed for hundreds of thousands of deaths each year”. This show that China's economic growth and increase in pollution is deadly because just breathing the air can kill you.
The problem with pollution in China has reached extreme levels and should be brought down as soon as possible. One thing that had shocked me from the article was that in 2010 Chinas air caused about 1.2 million pre mature deaths. Also citizens in china have to deal with choking smog and high amounts of toxins that can deeply penetrate the lungs and enter the bloodstream and causing diseases. Now in China it is not uncommon to see someone walking around with a mask to help filter out the toxins in the air. Also many parents are starting to choose schools based on air filtration systems just to keep their kids safe from the pollution. Could you ever imagine having to constantly were a mask just so you could breathe safely? Lastly even if China met their goal to reduce the pollution levels will still be 2.5 times the amount recommended by the world Health Organization. In China it is unbelievable that pollution could reach a level that it is at.
Pollution is not only a problem in China. In class we have learned that in America there is increased anoxia and hypoxia in environments due to run offs of fertilizers. These things cause algae blooms to form and bacteria have to decompose the large amounts of dead algae using large amounts oxygen in our waters and creating areas with anoxia and hypoxia. These issues may not have a direct impact on humans but these problems can cause many fish to die which is a major source of food in America. This might not be as big as the problem in China but it is still a major environmental issue that should be reduced in the U.S.  Both China and America have environmental issues that are being dealt with quickly.

I could never imagine having to wear a mask just to go outside and be safe or to not be able to take a breath of fresh air. This is something the people in China will never get to do unless they stop the burning of fossil fuels and the large amount of economic growth that is causing it. The pollution is causing many deaths every year and it will keep increasing for a while. The pollution in China is a major problem and it should be reduced very soon because it can cause many problems to the citizens.

  1. Really interesting article! It's horrible how much pollution is in the air all over the world. It's hard to believe that people actually wear masks over their faces just to go outside for short periods of time. You did a good job connecting the pollution in China to anoxia and hypoxia that we just recently learned about. I definitely agree with you in saying that I would not want to have to wear something over my face and not be able to get a nice breath of fresh air. Overall, good job!

  2. Great post. I loved how you linked it back to Bio class and really kept the readers attention. It showed that you really cared and were interested in this topic. Your title was great and i didn't see any spelling errors. Wasn't boring even though it could have been. It is really shocking that this could happen to us if we keep burning fossil fuels. What would happen if our parents had to pick our school looking at air quality.

  3. Your title was shocking, of course. At first, the thought of breathing killing people seemed like a ridiculous theory. But then, after reading your post, it made sense, although its still hard to believe. I thought the most interesting part of your post was the part about parents choosing schools for their children based on air filtration. It's shocking to see environmental factors affecting a person education. Also, I found the statistic of 1.2 million pre-mature deaths to be shocking as well. Great job on the blog post!

  4. Cole, I believe you chose a great article because this is just shocking to me and I’m sure it’s shocking to everyone else. I couldn’t imagine walking around knowing you are breathing in toxins that could kill you and if I lived there I would move right away. I want to know if it is actually possible to bring down the amount of toxins in the air and if they couldn’t then what would they do. You made some good connections to the U.S. and our class because we do both have environmental problems worth fixing although some may be direr than others. Overall, this was a good post and great summary.

  5. Your title was captivating, and linked very well to the subject. You had a good summary, but the sentences were a bit choppy. I agree with your conclusion, which was supported by many facts in your post. Your blog made it very clear that air pollution is a big problem in China, which I had heard of before, but didn't realize just how bad this was. Overall, good job.

  6. I think you choose a great article becaus it educated me on what was happening in China right now. I find it rather disturbing that in 2010 polltion had caused 1.2 million premature deaths. I also find it interesting how [arents in China are picxking their kids schools based on air fillteraion. I dont think I could to bring myself to wear a mask my whole life becasue of the air pollution. Overall, i really liek dyour article choice and your summary.

  7. Cole your article brings a very dangerous topic that was very surprising to me. I would have never thought that from the increase in economy would lead up to a very polluted China. I was so startled that people have to wear masks and that over a million people have died in 2010 because of the air alone. I was also surprised by how schools are now being chosen how how well they are able to filter the air and get ride of the toxins so that children are safe in school! Your connection to our class discussions of hypoxia and anoxia are superb as well. i hope that the US does not become polluted as bad as China is now. In conclusion, very good blog post.

  9. Cole,
I thought you did a really great job summarizing the article. You added many details but also made it easy to understand. I knew that China had problems with pollution, but I had no idea that it caused so many deaths. I really liked your connections to what we learned in class and I definitely agree with your opinion that that issue needs to be reduced. Great job!

  10. I agree with you Matt. This article really did educate me on how bad the pollution in China really is. I knew it was bad but I didn't know that people had to wear masks just to safe and I also didn't know that 1.2 million people died becasue of the pollution. I am really suprised this is not all over the news and people in China panicking. The Chinese governement isn't shutting down ant of the factorys. I would never like to go to China out of fear of dying. Cole, you did a good job on this article.

  11. Wow. I'd always known the pollution situation in China was dire but I had no idea to what extent this situation had worsened. Having to wear a mask in order to just be able to walk out your front door sounds like an awful way to have to live. It's terrifying to know this is happening in our world at all but when you connected it to what we've recently learned in class about hypoxia and anoxia it makes it all the more real for us. Great post!

  12. Cole, you did a great job explaining this topic! i had heard of the issue before but i had no idea of the severity. I really cant imagine having to wear a mask whenever you go outside just to filter out some of the toxins incorperated in the air. It is terrifying to see what people have the ability to do to our earth, ruining it with terrible toxins and industrial plants. Relating it to our class on the topics of hypoxia and anoxia was a great way to make the problem make more sense through comparing and contrasting. great job!

  13. Cool topic! When I read the title I was thinking to my self "Did he make a typo?" but your post was great and made sense. It is cool to see how one's economy can effect their pollution levels. I liked that you mentioned increased anoxia and hypoxia in environments are due to run offs of fertilizers, making it relatable since we have studied that in class.I agree that it would be ridiculous to wear a mask just to go outside. Well done.

  14. Great Job. Your title made me want to read more about what you are talking about. I knew that China has a lot of pollution and they have to wear masks, but I didn't know that many people were dying from breathing in the air and I also didn't know that many parents were just picking schools for their kids based on how much pollution is in the air. I couldn't imagine just taking one breath of air and in that one breath their are many toxins that can kill you. This had many great details that I never knew before. Great Job!
