Supersize Stress Could Equal Supersize "Fries"

A new study from St. Michael’s hospital shows that there might be a new link to childhood obesity- the parents and parental stress. A child who has extremely stressed parents can have a BMI of 2% more and gain weight 7% faster than children with parents who don’t have a lot of stress. the reason why this happens is not, clear, but doctors have some ideas.

Parents who are more stressed and worn out are more likely to do a lot less physical activity because they are too tired. Also, they are more likely to buy cheaper, quicker food because it takes a lot less time and effort. Children learn from their environment, so these children are getting less exercise and more unhealthy food. If your parents have more time and less stressed, then they will be more likely to take you to the park to get more physical activity and then cook you a nutritious meal.

Also, parental stress can be rubbed off on the kids. The kids may worry about their parent’s bad mood, and eat more and sit around more. This stress can lead to above average weight gain. This is especially worrisome, because the habits kids develop in these years will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

This article had similar ideas to the article by Craig Lambert we read in class, The Way We Eat Now. The article talked about different factors that contribute to being overweight and/or obese. It talked about how people eat fast food because it is quick cheap and easy and does not add stress. Also the article spoke about how kids sit around all day, on the computer and in front of the TV. This could be from parental stress. Adults do not have time or energy to take their kids outside, or even worry about their kids physical activity. With no motivation, the children continue sitting around and eating their way to obesity.

  1. Great job on your blog post Molly! I agree that parents behaviors could be a reason why some children are obese. If parents work a lot and don't have a healthy meal prepared for there children the kids are likely to fill up on junk food.I also agree that if parents have more time they will take the time to make a healthy meal and go outside with their kids. The connection you made to the article we read in our biology class really helped me understand more about what your blog post is about. Great job!

  2. Great job! I never thought that parental stress could lead to childhood obesity! Your blog really clearly explained to me that it is a possibile that parent's actions can lead to this problem. I can see how these could be valid reasons of how parents can lead to obesity because I know when my mom is stressed from work she does not feel like cooking and usually tells me to order a pizza.I also think your title was very creative

  3. Molly your blog post is very interesting! I would have never thought that there would a be a correlation between stressed parents and childhood obesity. When you begin to talk about why there is the correlation it makes sense because with less energy they will make less meals at home and buy out as well as do less physical activity, Your blog post made me think of the video I am watching in wellness called "Super size Me" which is about a man who goes on a McDonald diet for a month and records his health problems as the month continues. I strongly believe that fast food should be eaten in moderation and at the most 2 times a month. Overall, great blog post. .

  4. Great Job! First of all I thought that your title was very eye catching and it made me want to read this and figure out what you are talking about. Article is very detailed and has a lot of good information. I also agree with that if your parent is stressed they can have some bad habits and these bad habits can
rub off on their kids and that is one of the reasons for obesity. I liked the connection that you made to in class and your article also reminded me about the "Way We Eat Now" article as well. Great job!

  5. Nice blog Molly! I love your title because it was very creative and made me want to read your article. I thought it was very interesting that the parent’s mood and behaviors have such a big impact on their kid’s mood and behaviors. Kids tend to follow in their parents footsteps, so it makes sense that they would eat more fast food, do less physical activity, and be more depressed if that is what their parents are teaching them to do. I don’t think parents know how much of an impact they are having on their kids, and they need to be more careful of exhibiting good habits for their kids. I also feel that for depressed parents, this is not a good solution to their problem of depression because watching their kid gain weight and becoming obese probably causes more stress.

  6. Awesome job Molly! I was surprised to find out that parents could have a connection to child obesity. I agree with this because children learn from their parents and they watch their parents to learn right from wrong. I consider parents to be role models for their children. If they do not eat correctly, their kids probably do not either! I agree with you when you said that parental stress does have an affect on kids and eating is an easy way to get rid of stress. When my parents are stressed, we usually do not have a home cooked meal. Parents who are stressed all the time and never cook always order food to be delivered. Kids who eat out al the time are unhealthy and may become obese. I liked how you gave specific examples on how this relates to an article that we read in class. Overall, I loved your article and I thin you did a great job!!

  7. Nice job Molly! I thought your title was great and it drew me in. I think that the topic of your blog is really interesting. You wouldn't think that parents stress would reflect back on their kids. You make a good point when you say "Parents who are more stressed and worn out are more likely to do a lot less physical activity because they are too tired. Also, they are more likely to buy cheaper, quicker food because it takes a lot less time and effort." I agree completely because everyone is working so hard and so long nowadays. I liked how you connected this blog to the article we read in class. I think it relates well! Good Job!

  8. Great job Molly! As I was scrolling through the blogs I saw your tittle and it really caught my eye. It describes what the blog will be about while being very interesting. Overall this blog was great but one statement really stood out to me. You really made me think when you said, "This is especially worrisome, because the habits kids develop in these years will stay with them for the rest of their lives. " This is a very interesting statement and I agree that this is worrisome because children unhealthy lifestyles could affect what they do in the future. Your connection to class was also very good. This article definitely has some of the same ideas as the article from class, The Way We Eat Now. Great job!

  9. Good blog post! First off the title was eye catching and interesting! And then the content of your blog and the connection to class made this a well written and interesting post! While reading your post I really thought about this problem and ho interesting this theory is! I see how it would have an affect on childhood obesity and I'm glad you brought this to light! I did have some background knowledge on this topic, so to read this blog post and still learn something new really sold it to me! Good job!

  10. Great job, Molly! I thought you did a great job explaining the article. I found it extremely interesting because I didn't realize how much parents' stress can affect their kids. I knew that parents' habits will rub off on their kids, but not how much stress can affect and add to these habits. I really liked how you connected it to the article we read in class because it was easy to relate to. I think those two articles were very similar and can be connected to one another very well. I really enjoyed reading this post! Good job!

  11. Cool post! This is a very interesting and confusing topic but it makes sense! I believe the fact of parents who stressed and are likely to do a lot less physical activity because they are too tired is both clear and confusing at the same time. If they are stressed wouldn't they want to workout to relieve that stress and burn off some of that energy? I agree on the point that this can rub off on kids. Very nice post.

  12. Good job on your post. The title really caught my eye and I think your summary was well written and your opinion clearly stated. I always knew that obesity could be linked to low income or lack of available time, but I never really considered it to be linked to the parent's, not even the child's, levels of stress. The way you explained the connection was very clear and easy to understand. I like the way you connected this to the article we read in class.

  13. Your post makes a lot of sense to me. Whenever my parents are busy and stressed, I tend to see a pattern of unhealthy activity in myself. I usually end up eating take out or fast food, and hang around my house rather than exercising. Their stress has an effect on me, but I think it more directly has an effect on my stress level, which increases and then causes me to eat and act unhealthily. When I'm stressed about a project or because my mom has been frustrated and yelling all day, I'm much more likely to chow down on an ice cream cone after dinner.

  14. Great job! This post really caught my eye because we have been learning about this in gym class while watching Supersize Me. I think that its very interesting topic to hear about. It's interesting to think that childhood obesity could be caused by parental stress. I think that if people made a point to make homemade dinners there would definitely be a decrease in obesity. Overall really good job!

  15. Wonderful blog post! The title of this post really caught my attention. I think your blog post was well written and very interesting. I never knew that child obesity could have been caused by parental depression. I also agree with you that when a child parents feel stressed, it can make thier child feel overwelmed and stressed. I liked how you tied the article we read in class in to the post. This post was very interesting, awesome job!

  16. Your post really caught my eye, as my level of stress has really gone up since beginning high school. Though the post was mostly about the role stressed parents play in their kids' lives, I thought it was really interesting and informative. I agree with you when you say that "If your parents have more time and less stressed, then they will be more likely to take you to the park to get more physical activity and then cook you a nutritious meal", and that when they do have stress, they are more likely to take care of their own problems before doing something that requires time and effort, such as cooking a healthy meal. Overall, I enjoyed reading your post. Good job.

  17. I found this article very interesting. It was interesting to learn how parents stress can have a big effect on the child, I would have never though it would effect them that much. You had a nice summary of the article and used a lot of interesting facts that really drew me in. I was wondering what your take on this topic was or maybe what even the parents have to say about it. There were a few punctuation mistakes but other than that good job!

  18. I really liked this topic because it relates to children. I didn't know that parents stressing over children would affect them so much. I do agree with you when you said if parents had more time, they would be able to carry a stress free life with enough time to cook food and clean around the house. Our parents stress also directly affect us because sometimes we end up ordering fast food when our parents are busy and there stress sometimes makes us on edge also. I think this was a wonderful and interesting blog topic and response! Keep it up!

  19. I thought this post was very interesting. I never thought about the links between childhood obesity and parental stress, but it does make a lot of sense. I liked this post a lot because it was very informative but also easy to understand. I think the connection you made was really good too. I wish you had put your point of view in here as well to see what you think about this. do you think this theory makes sense? But overall you did a really great job!
