An Inspiration to Restoration

A tiny, flaming orange monkey, known as Brazil’s endangered Golden Lion Tamarin, could be the leader to the change we need in our world. This species has become a model that has saved other animals and plant life all over the world. I read this in an article called,Golden Lion Tamarins' Popularity In Brazil May Save The Country's Disappearing Forest,” by Juliana Barbosa on October 19, 2012.

The population of the Golden Lion Tamarin, has grown from just hundreds four decades ago to 1,700 in Rio de Janeiro state. The author states, “The campaign has transformed the lush forest where the monkeys live and has become a model widely cited for saving other animals.” People living in the area, from well-off landowners to farm workers, have learned how to make a living from growing the tree that the monkeys depend on for survival.

The Golden Lion Tamarin is in the running to be the 2016 Olympic mascot when the games take place in Rio. The next step to ensuring its survival might come from an Olympic project. The project would be to plant 24 million trees, enough to absorb the greenhouse gases that the vehicle traffic, construction and other activities of the games. The project would ensure that the Tamarins would have plenty of room and would also help restore the species- rich Atlantic forest that once covered much of Brazil’s coast.

This article caught my eye because it is an inspiration all over the world. This story of, not only the restoration of the Golden Lion Tamarins, but of the whole forest on the coast of Brazil as well, has given people an idea of what we can do to help our earth. People are already planning something to do to help like the project for the 2016 olympics that will help balance the air pollution because of the vehicle traffic that will occur during the games. I think that these small little monkeys are the leaders to the path of great change in the world. Maybe this story can open up the eyes of others to get our earth healthy and clean because it sure did open my eyes!

In class, when we watched “ The Lorax”, there were so many cars that would drive by on the new paved roads to get the trees, but I’m glad to see in our world that we are preparing for the Olympic games where there will be millions of cars driving to this event by planting a set amount of trees.

  1. I thought this was a great article. I agree with you that it is a really good idea to plant these trees. If anything, planting all those trees would cancel out the effects of all the pollution that people will create on their way to see the Olympics everyday for 2 weeks or so. I think that the monkeys would be a great sort of "mascot" for the 2016 Olympics. Great job!

  2. Great job, Emma! This was a very interesting article that you chose to write about. First of all, let me start by saying that I loved the description of the Golden Lion Tamarin that you included in your grabber. It immediately caught my attention. I think that it is so great that the Olympic project is in action, to ensure that the Tamarins have a habitat, in which they can depend on for survival. I completely agree with you when you say that this is an inspiration all over the world. I have been haering so much about people working very hard to make sure our planet is healthy, by attempting to cut down on pollution, recycle more, and of course plant trees. Nowadays, it seems like everyday is Earth Day, which is great. People giving back to their enviornment is a great way to show that they care about what our planet has to offer. Again, really great job! : )

  3. Emma, this blog post was very well done and interesting! This blog post really caught my attention because it talked about how humans are positively affecting the environment for a change. It shows that people do have the potential of making a change in the environment. The idea of planting 24 million trees almost seems too good to be true. That will surely ensure the survival of the Golden Lion Tamarin and balance the pollution coming from all the cars. One question I have is: Why are the Golden Lion Tamarin's known as endangered in Brazil if the population is increasing? Overall, really great job. The blog post was inspiring.

  4. Good job Emma, your article was very interesting. Also I loved that it was about good news. I am glad to hear that the monkeys are starting to regain their strength. I think it is so cool that they are donating that many trees. That will make a big difference in the world. I loved your line.. "I think that these small little monkeys are the leaders to the path of great change in the world." I agree with your statement. I think that people will realize what is happening to many animals and try to make a difference. There are so many animals that are endangered that a lot of people do not know of! Your article was eye opening! Good job!
